Portonovo: The Enchanting Bay!

Portonovo Bay is located in the province of Ancona, in the Marche region. It is the jewel of the Monte Conero Park. Portonovo is a natural landscape which is still intact: the Mediterranean Maquis plunges into the crystal clear water of the Adriatic Sea and offers glimpses of unspoiled nature. For this reason it is also called the Green Bay.

Portonovo: which beach to choose?

The beaches of Portonovo are characterized by the white pebbles of Conero stone, continuously smoothed by the waves. The sea is turquoise with shades of blue in the deepest areas ideal for diving and snorkeling.

The beaches of Portonovo welcome adults and children, and are the following:

  • The beach of Portonovo Bay

here you will find our beach, exactly in front of the pier. You can enjoy a relaxing day between fun and great food. Our beach is equipped and our services are designed to pamper you from breakfast to dinner. Discover our Beach Establishment in Portonovo here.
  • The Vela Beach

located on the South side of the Bay, after the church of Santa Maria di Portonovo, it takes its name from the large rock that overlooks it. It is characterized by two non-equipped coves: the first with large stones, the second, very small, with fine gravel. The passage from one cove to another is not recommended by land because it is very dangerous.
  • The Trave Beach

completely immersed in the Mediterranean Marquis of Monte Conero, it is the perfect beach for those who dream of an adventurous day. There is a jetty which begins at Monte Conero, and extends over the sea for at least 1 km, like a natural quay.
  • The Mezzavalle Beach

completely immersed in the Mediterranean Marquis of the Conero Park, this beach is the wildest. Ideal for those who want to indulge in an adventurous day. It can be reached on foot through a fairly tiring path or by sea, by boat. The beach is free and the sea will be one of the most beautiful you will find on the Conero Riviera.

What to see in Portonovo? The tours among nature and historical wonders all with a marvellous view of the sea.

Portonovo also offers an interesting historical-cultural tour with a view of the sea. The points of interest of Portonovo Bay, when you want to take a break from the sea, are:

  • The small church of Santa Maria di Portonovo

built in 1034 AD. Its position is unique, overlooking the sea. It was an ancient Benedictine abbey that has preserved an intimate atmosphere of peace and serenity over the years.
  • The Clementina Tower

commissioned in 1716 by Pope Clement XI, it was a watchtower to counter the raids of the Pirates who hindered trade with the city of Ancona.
  • Portonovo lakes

called Lago Profondo and Lago del Calcagno Grande, are brackish lakes surrounded by wild nature. The story goes that they are connected to the sea with underground tunnels which could form vortexes capable of sucking up anyone who swims near them. The lake area is ideal for those who love birdwatching.

Portonovo, how to get to the most beautiful beaches of the Conero Riviera.
